Entering Scholarly Conversations: Creating a Research Space (CARS)
As a graduate student, you will often be asked to enter into and contribute to existing scholarly conversations. For many grad students, this can be kind of nerve-wracking: How can I critique another (or a senior) scholar's work without coming across as opportunistic? What can I do to make other people recognize the value of my work or ideas? Can you make your work too different, or outside the mainstream? How do you stay connected to a central discussion but still pursue your own interests? This workshop will introduce CARS, a useful heuristic for conceptualizing the process of identifying and participating in an academic conversation. The moves we will discuss and practice are transferable to a number of different genres and writing tasks, such introductions, literature reviews, and research proposals.
